5 Small Ways To Cheer Up An Elderly Relative Or Friend Who’s Gone Into A Nursing Home

There are many benefits to assisted living for the elderly. With around-the-clock care, they can feel more relaxed and comfortable, while you’re free to attend to other matters.

However, some nursing homes can feel like “imprisonment” to mature individuals. They may feel like they’re losing a part of their life. But even these older kin can do well in a nursing home with a little cheering up!

Reasons To Cater To The Happiness Needs Of The Seniors

As we age, our health becomes increasingly more important to maintain in order to keep our immune system strong and ward off illness and disease. Happiness is also a critical factor in longevity, so it’s important that aged persons feel content, loved, and cared for.

If you have an elderly friend living in a nursing home, below are five small ways you can help cheer them up:

1. Visit Them More Often

Older folks love spending time with their younger loved ones, and that’s for a fact. This is why you should visit your elderly loved ones in a nursing home often. One thing is sure to make your next visit a big success and one that can be edged in the memory of your loved one: focus on spending some quality time with them. Below are some fun ways to make such visits count:

  • Bring along a childhood photo album or home video to share
  • Play cards or a board game together
  • Go for a walk together (if weather permits)
  • Make conversation about current events, news, etc.

2. Listen And Learn

It’s no secret that a good conversation can help to get rid of some negativity. Your loved one will want to know about your progress, how other family members are doing, and the nitty-gritties that might be of account. Whenever there’s such a talk, ensure to keep it friendly. Such a tone can help calm them down if any issues need to be addressed.

3. Room Decorations Are Important

When your elderly loved ones are far from home, you can help them feel more comfortable by redecorating their room with familiar colors, pictures, and other items. This is a welcoming gesture that will help to put them at ease and make them feel more at home.

4. Take Them Out

Most elderly homes have some restrictions in place, but you might be able to take your loved ones out for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Make the most of the time you have with them and treat them right by exposing them to the outside world.

5. Protect Their Rights: Beware Of Signs Of Abuse And Neglect

The fact that your elderly loved one is in a nursing home doesn’t mean that you should neglect their happiness. Unfortunately, nursing home abuse cases have been on the rise in recent years, and this is a worrying trend that needs to be addressed. Always make a point to help them feel protected by following up on their wellbeing and checking for any signs of mistreatment. If you suspect abuse, contact a nursing home lawyer immediately. They can help ensure that your elderly loved one gets justice.

  • Bruises, cuts, and broken bones;
  • Malnourishment;
  • Poor hygiene;
  • Loss of money and unexplained transactions;
  • Anxiety, confusion, or depression;
  • Withdrawal from friends and family.
  • These are all signs that you may be a victim of domestic violence. If you are experiencing any of these, please reach out for help.

It can be tough when loved ones are no longer as involved in our lives as they once were, especially if they need assistance with everyday tasks. It’s also difficult when we have to place them in a nursing home or assisted living facility. However, there are ways to stay connected and maintain a strong relationship despite the physical distance. Some ideas to get started include making regular phone calls, writing letters or emails, sending photos, and planning visits. By staying in touch, we can keep our cherished relationships alive and thriving.
